Shropshire technology firm PebblePad has opened its first office in America as it looks to grow across the Pond.

The Telford-based business develops a web-based teaching and learning system for use by universities, and has already seen its products widely adopted in Australia.

Now, after spending 11 years developing its reputation at home and in the southern hemisphere, PebblePad has opened in North America for the first time.

The south eastern city of Atlanta has been selected as the location for the new base thanks to the overlap in time zones with the UK, and the major airport in the state capital of Georgia.

PebblePad, which employs 36 people in the UK and two in Australia, hopes to grow its £1.5 million turnover by around 50 per cent after the move.

"Following our success in both the UK and Australia, I can't wait to introduce PebblePad to the US," said Holly Lewis, vice president of the North American operation, who will man the office in Georgia.

"There's just so much enthusiasm for PebblePad – it really is an exciting opportunity."

Existing customers include British Swimming, The University of Sydney, The University of Edinburgh, and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.

The company, based in the e-Innovation Centre on the University of Wolverhampton's Priorslee Campus, is also holding open recruitment for new developers to help add to the software it has already developed for the PebblePad.

Co-founder Colin Dalziel added: "Our software development team is made up of highly talented people and we are always looking for the next star recruit to join us.

"With the expansion into the USA we are going to be increasing our workforce. Our plans include a number of new technologies, so it is going to be a busy year."
