Joe Farrell, aged 21, attacked the young boy on September 7, 2022 in Shrewsbury as the victim was on his way from school to the gym, a court heard.
Shrewsbury Crown Court was told on Monday that Farrell was with another man when they attacked the youth, but charges were dropped against the co-defendant.
Prosecuting, Mr Syed Ahmed, told the court that the “one-punch” thrown by Farrell of no fixed abode had broken the victim's jaw in two places.
He said: the victim was making his way to the gym and was outside KFC in Barker Street in Shrewsbury when the man with Farrell had punched the victim first but Farrell's blow had sent the boy reeling to the ground.
“Despite his jaw not feeling right he continued to the gym where friends told him to seek treatment," said Mr Ahmed. “At hospital, which he attended on his own, a medical x-ray showed the jaw was fractured on both sides and required surgery.”
