Billy Griffiths admitted driving without due care and attention in a red Peugeot 106 at Knighton on July 12, when he appeared at Llandrindod Wells Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Police stopped the 24 year-old of Oakdene, Victoria Road, Knighton because they felt he was speeding.

Prosecuting, Mr James Ashton said Griffiths admitted he is a drugs user and said he previously used cocaine. He had two passengers in the vehicle at the time of the offence.

Roadside tests were positive for drugs and at Newtown Police Station trace amounts of cannabis and cocaine were found in a urine test.

Mr Ashton said Griffiths has a previous conviction for drug driving from 2020 when he received a community order and was disqualified from driving for 23 months.

Mitigating, Mr Owain Jones said Griffiths accepts he was guilty and has a clean licence.

He said Griffiths is a mechanic but handed in his notice a month ago because he feared the worst in the court case but now he may be able to re-apply for the job.

“He consumed drugs on the weekend before this incident. He takes drugs recreationally and he is sorry for the way he was driving and he assures me he has learnt his lesson,” Mr Jones said.

Magistrates fined him £80 and his licence was endorsed with six penalty points.

He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £32 victim surcharge.
