All westbound lanes were blocked for around an hour as a result of the collision near Wolverhampton.

Police, paramedics and firefighters were all sent to the crash, which happened between junctions two and three shortly after 5pm on Wednesday.

Motorists heading towards Telford and Shrewsbury were stuck in queues behind the incident, with stationary traffic backed up towards the M6 and the A449 Stafford Road, in Wolverhampton, and the A461 for Cannock.

The road remained blocked until the vehicles were moved to the hard shoulder and all lanes reopened at 6pm.

Staffordshire Police spokesman David Bradbury said: "Thankfully, there were no injuries reported during the incident and no-one was taken to hospital."

Highways England arranged for the recovery of all vehicles involved.
