Canoeist, 40, dies in river incident

A canoeist died after getting into difficulty on a river in Mid Wales.

Emergency services were called to the Pwll Penarth Nature Reserve, near Newtown, on Saturday morning, after reports of a man getting into difficulty on the river.

A 40-year-old man died at the scene.

Dyfed-Powys Police are not treating the death as suspicious and have sent their condolences to his family.

Anna James, from the force said: "At 11.50am on Saturday, Dyfed-Powys Police received a report of a canoeist facing difficulty at Pwll Penarth Nature Reserve, near Newtown.

"Sadly, a 40-year-old man died at the scene. His next of kin and HM Coroner have been informed. Our thoughts are with his family. The death is not being treated as suspicious.”
