Officers said the attack, which has left a 15-year-old boy in a critical condition in hospital, was an isolated incident.

Police were called to St Oswald's Church graveyard between 3pm and 4pm on Friday, after reports of a serious assault.

The 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and was kept in police custody over the weekend as the scene was cordoned off.

On Monday, police confirmed the teenager had been released on bail.

Tracy Ryan, inspector for the Oswestry area, urged people not to be alarmed but confirmed there had been an increased police in the town over the weekend, and would be for the start of this week.

A renewed appeal for information has also been issued.

Presence

Inspector Ryan said: "We have had an increased police presence in the town and are continuing that.

"We are continuing to investigate the incident, and are appealing for anyone with information to step forward.

"There is no need for the people of the town to be alarmed, this is an isolated incident and there isn't a threat or impact on the wider community."

Police cars blocked both entrances to the church on Saturday morning as investigations continued into the circumstances.
