Many concerts and sports fixtures have been cancelled ahead of the weekend and travel has been widely disrupted – with more trouble on the cards.

Hundreds of schools remained closed today and drivers who did venture out faced huge snow drifts and icy roads across Shropshire and Mid Wales.

The A5 and A49 were both blocked for lengthy periods, while the A41 is expected to stay shut overnight between the A53 at Tern Hill and the A5 at Weston Park, aside from a short stretch near Newport.

Further snow was forecasted to fall across Wales, the Midlands and and central southern England this afternoon and into tonight.

The Met Office says there could see a further 5-15 cm by this evening in some areas.

“There’s further snow to come, as well as a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain.”
