The Environment Agency said it would be deploying low level barriers at Frankwell, Shrewsbury, this evening after the Theatre Severn has closed.

Just two schools remained closed in Shropshire today - Bicton, near Shrewsbury, where the heating has broken down, and Dothill, in Wellington, which has suffered a burst water main.

This video by the Environment Agency's Chris Bainger shows the scene at Shrewsbury Weir as the River Severn responds to the melting snow.

The Environment Agency has issued Flood Alerts - meaning 'be prepared' - for:

  • The River Severn in Shropshire

  • The River Worfe

  • The Severn Vyrnwy Confluence

  • Tern and Perry Catchments

  • Upper Teme

An earlier warning for Rea Brook and Cound Brook has been removed.

Emergency services reported treacherous conditions last night as snow came down again as well as freezing rain. But with temperatures due to rise during the day, the snow will continue to thaw and feed the river network.

The Met Office has issued a Yellow Warning of ice from 11am today until 11am on Friday.

It said: "Once again, ice will be a hazard in places through this period. This will happen as heavy showers of rain, hail, sleet and snow alternate with clearer periods, allowing temperatures to dip sharply."

Dave Throup, from the Environment Agency, said the snow had been widespread.

He said: "It's right across the catchment from the very tops of the mountains all the way across the lowlands.

"It's all going in our rivers. It's causing some rises in river levels but nothing too significant.

"We've got flood alerts across Shropshire both on the Severn and some of the tributaries.

"The water is working its way through as it always does. There is a peak coming down at Welshpool at the moment which will arrive in Shrewsbury tomorrow.

"I think it will stay at alert level rather than warning level.

"We are keeping a close eye on it but everything is okay."

Today road conditions remained tricky in many areas.

Trains between Craven Arms and Llanelli remained suspended after a number of fallen trees and overhanging branches were removed.

Replacement bus services operated yesterday and were due to operate today.

Arriva Trains Wales said the blockage is due to fallen trees and overhanging branches.

Safety inspection trains were due to run along the line this afternoon to see if it is safe for public use.
