Forecasters have predicted that temperatures across the region could reach as low as -5C (23F) during the night.

Snow is not anticipated during the cold snap but the freezing temperatures mean a yellow warning for ice is in place from 4pm this afternoon until 11am tomorrow morning.

The Met Office has warned the frost will be 'severe' and that there will be a 'continued ice risk'.

Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge added: "We are not expecting too much more in terms of fresh snowfall and the risk now transfers to ice.

"We have got fairly widespread clear skies, which will bring temperatures down and where there is lying snow, that creates an ice risk."

It is expected that gritters will be out on most of the region's roads tonight, with concerns the anticipated ice could cause mayhem for commuters in the morning.

Meanwhile Public Health England urged people to check in on elderly loved ones and those with heart and lung conditions and recommended heating homes to at least 18C.
