New CCTV planned for Ellesmere recycling facility

New CCTV could be installed in a recycling facility as a short-term measure to stop people dumping their rubbish there.

Ellesmere Town Council is considering installing new temporary surveillance at the facility, which is housed in the car park in Talbot Street.

Talks have been taking place between the town council and Veolia about eventually removing the facility for good.

Councillor Ian Ward, mayor of Ellesmere, said lots of items were often dumped there, which did not represent the town in good light

He said: "We have been getting quotes for CCTV as a measure to monitor the waste dumped there. We have had problems with flytipping which is making the area look unsightly.

"We are looking at it as a temporary measure until we get rid of the recycling area.

"I think the plan is to gradually reduce the number of bins.

"There are alternative places in the town such as Tesco, and Shropshire Council has extended its roadside collection from people's houses."

The issue is set to be discussed at Ellesmere Town Council's meeting on Monday.

"We need to look at how much it will cost and what the timescale will be to completely replace the facility," Councillor Ward added.
