That is part of more than £430,000 raised across Shropshire as a whole.

Plans are already being put into place for this year's Poppy Appeal and organisers hope to exceed the 2015 total.

Jenny Robey, Poppy Appeal community fundraiser in Shropshire, said: "The Poppy Appeal raised more than £430,000 in Shropshire in the past year with Shrewsbury adding considerably to this.

"We hope to increase this within the county in the coming year, but the support of our volunteers is vital. Although most people associate the Poppy Appeal as during the first two weeks in November, it is very much a 12-month appeal, with fundraising 365 day a year.

"We appreciate all the ongoing support we receive from members of the public and the business community."

The British Legion is hosting a meeting about the Poppy Appeal at Harlescott Social Club on Wednesday at 7pm. Call 07918562902 to attend.
