Davenport House in Worfield, near Bridgnorth, is available for rent after Roger and Jane Murphy, who for the past 22 years have been running it as an hotel and conference centre, decided to retire.

The 11-bedroom property, set in its own private parkland close to the centre of the village, dates back to 1726.

Susie King, of Balfours Property, said the property would be suitable for either commercial or residential use.

"Many people will know Davenport House as a fabulous venue hosting weddings and other private functions," she said. "Sadly the present incumbents are retiring this autumn and the property is available to let on a long-term lease."

As well as 11 bedrooms, the property also has six reception rooms, stables and grazing land.

Henry Davenport, who made his fortune in India, was the first owner of the house, having commissioned renowned architect Francis Smith of Warwick to design and build the property.

The house, in the Palladian style, which means it has four matching pavilions, remained home to the Davenport family until 1993, when it was leased to Mr and MrsMurphy.

During the Second World War, in the days running up to D-Day, the grounds were turned over to the US Army and covered with Nissen huts and tents.

Mr Murphy said: "We have loved living in this house – it offers the opportunity for the most magnificent and memorable occasions – and that is why Jane and I came here.

"We've met lots of lovely people, many who frequently return and some of whom have become great friends too."

The house has also hosted a number of high-profile functions, including a visit by former Conservative Party leader William Hague in the run-up to the 2005 General Election.

The couple have also catered for the Queen on two occasions, as well as Prince Charles, Princess Anne and Bill and Hillary Clinton.
