The Conservative MP says such a move would create a "super hospital" for the county.

Her meeting with Mr Hunt is part of the ongoing discussion on Shropshire NHS services being drawn up by health bosses. They say only one of the county's hospitals can support an A&E, and Ms Allan wants it to be in Telford.

She said the unit would deal with the most serious and life-threatening cases, as well as provide an urgent walk-in centre.

Ms Allan said: "I have made the case to the Secretary of State that Telford's Princess Royal needs the new Critical Care Unit to ensure the best possible care for the area.

"Telford is the fastest-growing town in the West Midlands and has the greatest healthcare need. It's vital for Telford's future that we have the best emergency care so we can continue to grow. People moving here need to know that they will be able to get emergency care quickly if they need it.

"There is also significant health inequality between Telford and the rest of Shropshire. Telford has pockets of deprivation that leads to a greater need for healthcare services than our closest neighbours.

"The local Clinical Commission Group will shortly make an announcement on this issue and I urge them to consider the compelling arguments for bringing the new unit to Telford."
