Glynn Barnard hit Matthew Moffat after they had both left a pub in Ludlow town centre. His victim's jaw was fractured in multiple places and Mr Moffat had to spend four days in hospital following the attack, Shrewsbury Crown Court was told.

Barnard, 32, of Chestnut Grove, Ludlow, handed him himself in to police following the altercation, which took place between Upper Galdeford and Lower Galdeford on October 17 last year. He was sentenced at court on Friday after admitting one count of grievous bodily harm.

The court was told the two men had been drinking together in the pub and that the victim had followed Barnard after he left before the assault happened.

In a statement read to the court,Mr Moffat said: "I felt something hit me on my head. It knocked me to the floor. I looked up and it was Glynn."

Mr Kevin Jones, prosecuting, told the court that Mr Moffat had been walking away when Barnard struck him.

Mr Dean Easthope, for Barnard, told the court how his client had been "goaded" by the victim all evening and how he had helped the victim into a taxi after the assault. He said: "The victim was looking for an altercation."

Judge Peter Barrie sentenced Barnard to an eight-month jail term, of which he will serve half in custody and the rest in the community.
