Two other men were also involved in the unprovoked and cowardly attack in the Station Hotel in Wellington in July last year.

Footage from the pub's CCTV showed the three defendants setting on victim Martin Poole inside and outside the premises.

Lee Jones, 22, and Sean Neary, 25, grabbed the victim by the throat and pushed him over a pool table before Jones threw three or four punches. Jamie Solon, 20, then came from behind, leaning over the top of the others, and swung out at Mr Poole's face with a pint glass.

Mr Poole suffered a wound to his wrist, swollen and cut lips and damage to his nose and to an elbow. Solon was given a total of 42 weeks custody in a young offenders' institution and Jones received a 34-week sentence, suspended for two years, while Neary was given a 12- month community order. In addition Jones will be subject to a six-month weekend curfew and Neary must complete 100 hours unpaid work and be subject to a four-month 6am to 6pm curfew.

Both Neary and Jones have to pay £500 compensation and £400 costs and all three defendants have been excluded from the Station Hotel pub for two years.

Solon, of Melrose Gardens, Jones, of Montgomery Road and Neary, of Audley Court, all Wellington, had admitted assault causing actual bodily harm. Neary and Jones also admitted common assault.

Judge Robin Onions said the reason for the assault was unclear and told Solon he was involved in an act of cowardice, delivering a deliberate blow towards Mr Poole's face while he was defenceless. "Had he not got his arm up the glass would have smashed in his face and the consequences do not bear thinking about," he said.
