A top line-up of local chefs have been added to the bill for this year's Shrewsbury Flower Show.

Organisers of the annual event, which attracts about 50,000 visitors per year, have announced the names of the culinary guest stars who will be putting on masterclasses in the Quarry this year.

Executive head chef of Shrewsbury Town Football Club Paul Crowe, nutritionist and Dorrington Old Hall Persian Cuisine owner Dr Lal Haider, and chef and popular food writer Sean Bird have been booked for the event on August 9 and 10.

Chocolatier Julia Wenlock will also be appearing at the event, cooking up treats in the Marches Food Hall.

Mr Crowe, who has previously worked with the likes of Gordon Ramsey, Michel Roux Senior and James Martin, will be demonstrating how he uses the ingredients in his cooking for the club to keep the fans, visitors, players and staff satisfied."

Mr Crowe said: "As far as I know we are the only football club in the country if not the world with its own kitchen garden and orchard.

"Since I planted it some six years ago it has grown from a couple of herb bushes to what it is today with over 80 varieties of herbs, soft fruits and nuts."

Dr Haider will be cooking Middle Eastern cuisine with a healthy twist, offering up dishes such as biryani-style pulao, meat-free alternatives and prune recipes.

"I want people to leave my demonstration believing that healthy eating isn't boring and that curry has finally shaken its image as an unhealthy food, which only goes with several beers," he said.

Mr Bird will be demonstrating recipes and how to best use edible flowers and micro-herbs in dishes.

"I am delighted to be invited to take part in this year's 126th Shrewsbury Flower Show," he said.

"I am really looking forward to sharing my ideas and passion for showcasing regional recipes and flavours with the visitors throughout the weekend."

Donna Hamer, chairman of Shrewsbury Flower Show, said: "Food plays such an essential part in Shrewsbury Flower Show, so we are really pleased these superb local chefs will be joining us this year.

"Food lovers will be guaranteed a fantastic day out."
