Officials at Teme Leisure have revealed their plans for Wem Swimming Pool.

The company, which manages five leisure centres across the county, had been due to relinquish control of Wem Swimming Pool at the start of this year but has now agreed to continue running the site for another two years.

Lee Hassan, general manager at Teme Leisure, said the company had a long-term plan to improve and extend the swimming pool at Butler Sports Centre in Bowens Field.

Mr Hassan said: "We'd look to add to the building to put a proper gym in and a dance studio.

"This is a longer term desire though, which we hope to achieve in the next 18 months to two years, unfortunately it will not happen overnight.

"It is something both the town council and the Friends of Wem Swimming Pool are looking to achieve as well.

"We will apply for external funding and I think we would need about £1 million to do what we want to do. It is very much in the planning stage."

The Severn Centre in Highley, near Bridgnorth, had been due to take over the running of pool on January 1 after Teme Leisure announced in May that it was pulling out, citing 'economic reasons'.

But at the last minute the deal with Severn Centre fell through and Teme Leisure signed up to stay put until the end of 2014.

"We have had a fantastic relationship with the council over the years so luckily we were able to step in," Mr Hassan said.

The pool is currently closed for £2,000 of improvement work including painting and tiling, as well as cleaning.

It is due to reopen on Monday.
