Happy Mondays star Shaun Ryder is to visit the county this week – as the star attempts to discover whether the truth is out there in Shropshire for a new UFO show.

Ryder, who was runner-up two years ago in ITV1 show I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here, is filming a new television series for the History Channel.

He plans to investigate the existence of aliens by visiting sites and experts in Peru, Chile, America, Australia . . . and Shropshire.

He is coming to the county to meet local UFO believers Darren Perks and Phil Hoyle, who will be showing him around Shrewsbury and other locations in Shropshire and Powys.

The programme is to be called Shaun Ryder on UFOs.

Mr Perks, who is from the Herongate area of Shrewsbury, said he was approached to be on the show because of his sighting of a potential UFO over RAF Cosford in March 1993 when he was 16. Since the encounter, Mr Perks has set up a website about the incident.

He said Mr Ryder would be talking to him about the incident and its significance.

"We will be going out around Shropshire and Powys and covering all sorts of things, from UFO sightings to animal mutilations," he said.

Mr Perks said the Happy Mondays star had been chosen to front the series due to his own belief in aliens. "He was growing up and living in Manchester. He witnessed a UFO at the age of 15 flying over where he lived," he said.
