Residents fighting plans for six massive wind turbines near the Shropshire/ Staffordshire border have forked out more than £16,000 on consultants.

The application, to be decided by South Staffordshire Council, is for six of the tallest turbines in the country to be built within the grounds of the Bradford Estate, Weston-under-Lizard.

The turbines would be 413ft (126m) tall - two-and-a-half times the height of Nelson's Column in London.

Wind Prospect, which has submitted plans on behalf of the estate, has said electricity generated would power more than 6,000 homes, inc-luding some in Shropshire.

But angry nearby residents claim the turbines would ruin the landscape.

Now the King Street Stag (Stop Turbine Action Group) has brought in consultants to boost its argument.

Stag vice chairman Tony Skelton said: "We are about to submit a substantial rebuttal document to Wind Prospect's application and that will be going in early next week."

He said the document cost about £16,000 and outlined all the reasons why the turbines should not be app- roved for the site.

Mr Skelton added: "About 400 people have written personal letters to object."

He said if the application was turned down and Wind Prospect appealed, the group could face a bill of more than £50,000.
