A £5 million hotel was due to open its doors in Shropshire today creating 40 jobs.

The Premier Inn chain opened its latest venture in Newport which includes The Three Fish Beefeater Restaurant.

The 50-bedroom hotel at Mere Park, on the edge of Newport, is expected to pull in tourists and diners to the town.

Bosses were expecting to open the hotel on Monday but last-minute finishing touches to its interior meant it was delayed until today.

Forty jobs are being provided by the whole development, with restaurant company Whitbread PLC taking on chefs, kitchen, bar and waiting staff for the restaurant.

Premier bosses are also promoting the hotel for using sustainable "green" technologies in its construction.

The build also features underfloor heating, water saving taps, LED lighting and sustainable timber for the restaurant building.

The general manager Pascal Bamford said: "We are delighted to bring a new Premier Inn to Newport and look forward to welcoming our guests to enjoy either a meal or a night's stay with us.

"The new Three Fish restaurant and Premier Inn is creating 40 jobs for local people and we hope to welcome customers through the doors of our restaurant very soon."
