Shropshire football fans young and old were out in force to meet World Cup-winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks as he cut the ribbon on new facilities at a county residential home.

The 72-year-old delighted residents, families and staff as he officially opened a new extension at Hinstock Manor Residential Home, near Market Drayton.

Famed for his agility and reflex saves, Mr Banks was goalie during the 1966 campaign, which saw England beat West Germany at Wembley in the final.

In the 1970 World Cup he pulled off one of the greatest saves of all time to deny Brazil star Pele a goal.

Mr Banks, who played for Chesterfield, Leicester City and Stoke City, said he was impressed with the new facilities at the care home.

Care home bosses even set up goalposts in his honour.

Autograph hunters were not disappointed as the one-time Telford United manager stopped to sign books for fans.

It is hoped the care home's new facilities will create more suitable accommodation for older people needing care in Shropshire.

The new £1.5 million extension has doubled the size of the home and created a number of new jobs.

The extensions includes new rooms all with walk-in wet rooms and a flat screen TV.

There are also two self-contained flats - each with a living room, bedroom and kitchen - and the residents now have a new larger dining area which boasts a large TV.
