A 53-year-old Shrewsbury man who made and distributed nearly 14,000 pornographic images of children has been jailed for three years and barred from working with children for the rest of his life.

Jeremy Russell-Simmons, of Rea Street, Belle Vue appeared in Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday.

He previously admitted five counts of distributing photographs and five counts of making photographs.

The court heard that between November 22, 2007, and April 11, 2008, 2,279 photographs were either made available for others to see or were sent to people Russell-Simmons had met on an internet chat site and described as "fellow pervs".

The total number of photographs made was 11,573 between March 6, 2005 and April 11, 2008.

He also admitted possessing an offensive weapon after he was found on the A49 after his arrest on April 11 last year, carrying a kitchen knife and claiming he was going to Ludlow to kill himself.

Judge Robin Onions sentenced Russell-Simmons to three years on each count, to run concurrently and four months, to run concurrently, for possession of an offensive weapon.

He was also barred from working with children for the rest of his life and made subject to notification re-quirements under the Sexual Offences Act for the rest of his life. Other conditions were imposed to protect children, including barring him from using a computer.

Mr Edward Soulsby, prosecuting, said a raid was carried out on Russell-Sim- mons's home and hard drives with pornographic images and videos were discovered.

He said records of chats on a website were found where Russell-Simmons described how he liked children bet-ween 12 and 15 and went to Thailand where younger peo- ple were readily available.

Mr Mike Sherwood-Smith, for Russell-Simmons, said: "Up until approximately 1999 Mr Simmons was a successful businessman and well thought of. He had a stroke in 1999 which has left him with some impairment to cognitive skills and movement on his right side."

He added that the death of the defendant's mother had compounded issues. He said: "He shows sincere remorse, he is disgusted and thorou-ghly thoroughly ashamed."
