Roadworks are putting shoppers off visiting

Letter: My wife and I decided to go shopping in Shrewsbury recently. Being over 60 we drove to the Meole Brace Park and Ride and took a free bus to town.

We finished our shopping about noon and as the traffic in town was solid we decided to wait for the Meole Brace Park and Ride bus at the new stop near the bus station.

There we stood in sun and rain as three Oxon Park and Ride buses came out and went, followed by three Harlescott Park and Ride buses and then at long last the Meole Brace one came, which we gladly boarded.

The driver, Robert, was a pleasant, positive man who kept a happy face despite the state of town traffic. So we started the journey back, the cross at the Welsh Bridge took a little time to navigate.

But on Town Walls, near the junction of Swan Hill, near the entrance to the High School, a lorry labelled Alsager Construction was busy excavating a deep hole.

It was at this point that our driver showed real skill, patience and good humour, which earned him a round of applause from his passengers.

The workers (so-called) were not of much use, one was talking into his mobile, the other was down in the hole until the driver asked him to help. We were amazed by the skill of our driver and he fully deserves his pay.

We understand that the roadworks will continue for many weeks, but we will not be visiting the town until the insane urge of our councillors to dig up our streets has finished, no doubt much to the relief of the shopkeepers.

Of course, if these roadworks continue, it is doubtful if many shopkeepers will still be trading as shoppers will find other places to visit and spend their money in.
