Newport traditionally celebrates the feast day on April 23 with all manner of pageantry, entertainment and food, including the ever-popular dragon sausages.

But the coronavirus crisis which came to the UK in early 2020 meant that last year's event had to be cancelled.

Now, with infection rates high and hundreds of deaths reported every day, Newport's mayor Peter Scott confirmed that this year's event will not go ahead.

"It is with regret that we announce there will be no St George's Day event in Newport High Street this year.

"The uncertainty around Covid means that we feel we cannot put the public at risk by having a gathering.

"We hope and expect to be back for 2022."
