The party were chosen at the end of a day of fundraising by the committee, who went out into Newport in costume.

They managed to raise £570 for carnival funds, and today organisers said thank you to everybody that had donated.

Graham Foster, chairman of the committee, said: "The people in town really entered into the spirit of the day and were very generous with their donations with approximately £570 being raised for the carnival funds. A very big thank you to everyone who donated and without the generousity its of towns people, businesses, and community groups, the carnival would not be the event it is.

"The weather certainly helped and fingers crossed it continues through until June 8 for Carnival day here in Newport."

The fundraising efforts included face painting and children's character s from Paw Patrol.
