The town's Market Square was transformed to mark the 775th anniversary of its 1244 market charter featuring the convening of the ancient Court Leet – complete with 18th century costumes.

Organisers say they were delighted with the event which had to be cancelled last year due to freezing weather conditions.

At the event on Saturday spectators were entertained by the amusing ceremony to appoint the clerk of the market, the town crier and the ale taster for the year ahead.

Newly appointed market clerk Crispin Barker, 61, a retired lecturer, said: "I will be responsible for the opening market and with my new keys. I am hoping to serve for a long time, but that will be up to the jurors."

The Ironmen & Severn Gilders Morris Dance Team delighted the crowds were with their traditional routines and resplendent red and black coloured face paint and matching costumes.

Other events included a community history event at Wellington Library, in Tan Bank and a scone-baking contest.

Wellington resident Sandra Scholey, 77, said: "I'm glad I was able to come and watch because last year it was cancelled because of the Beast from the East.

"It's interesting to come and see a traditional event and learn about the history of Wellington and why the charter was made all those centuries ago. I'm also looking forward to the morris dancing."

The annual event is organised by community group Wellington H2A.

Rob Francis, of Wellington H2A, said: "It's been a great day and the weather stayed good for us. There was a great crowd in the square and a lot of smiling faces which is what it's all about.

"It created a good atmosphere in the middle of the town."
