Don’t worry, the aliens haven’t landed! Telford50 Big Top tent ready for anniversary events

It may look like something from the sci-fi film Independence Day, but this is actually the spectacular Big Top being put up in Telford ready for a fortnight of acts from some of the biggest names in British entertainment.

Work on the big white tent began on Wednesday afternoon and was completed yesterday morning.

Today workers will be building the stage and preparing the 1,000-seater venue for the first show tomorrow.

The big top has been built to celebrate both the 50th anniversary of Telford and of Oakengates Theatre.

The first show is a performance by tenor Russell Watson, and will take place at 7.30pm on Saturday. Watson will perform a mix of his greatest hits and tracks from his most recent

It will be the start of two weeks of entertainment, featuring some of the most popular acts in music and comedy.

The rest of the week will see acts including comedian Dara O’Briain on Wednesday and Boyzlife, made up of Brian McFadden and Keith Duffy of Westlife and Boyzone, on Friday.

The Telford50 Big Top

Families will be able to take a trip millions of years into the past with a visit by Dinosaur World Live.

The interactive show, which takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday, will bring the Tyrannosaurus Rex, a Triceratops, Giraffatitan, Microraptor and Segnosaurus to life.

The second week will feature a Proms in the Park, a singalong with the films The Greatest Showman and Grease, comedians Al Murray and Doreen Tipton and music from S Club, 5ive, East 17 and Collabro.
