The Board of the Clifton Community Arts Centre has announced that the lease on the building has now been signed and work can begin on converting the building into a community art space.

The project will include a cinema as well as a cafe and bistro.

The building will be known as the Wellington Orbit and the team's social media pages will be going live in the next few days.

Fiona Hunter, The Clifton director and PR manager, said: "We are immensely grateful to everyone who has been on this six year journey with us. We will shortly be announcing further investment, sponsorship and volunteering opportunities."

In November 2012 five people agreed to work with the community and local councils to bring an art exhibition, training and cinema facilities to Wellington.

Although the initial venue of the former Clifton cinema was unsuccessful, an agreement was reached to pursue alternative buildings.

The cinema will be known as The Clifton Suite, acknowledging the Clifton’s contribution to the history of cinema in Wellington.
