Birthday fun in the sun at Telford park marks St George's Day

A calendar of events to mark Telford's 50th birthday continued with thousands of people flocking to the town park for a day of activities.

Telford & Wrekin Council put on a Spring into St George's Day to mark the celebrations for the town and also to mark England's patron saint.

A host of activities took place in the sunshine, including camel racing, circus skills, knight jousting, a dog show, and children's TV stars Mike the Knight and Evie were also on hand to meet youngsters.

Alex Harris, events specialist for the authority insisted around 12,000 people came into the park for the event yesterday, and it is just the first in a long line of celebratory events the council is holding over the coming year.

He said: "It is a great event and we had the weather come out which was fantastic, and I think over the day there was around 12,000 people who came in, that is how many we estimated.

"There has been a host of activities for everyone, so many young families have come along and it was all for young families really.

"We have lots more coming up in the next few months, this event was the start of all the birthday celebrations.

"And by having so many people here it shows that the public in Telford appreciate the events we put on, because we give them value for money.

Events have already taken place in the first four months of the year, and the council has a packed schedule ahead of them to celebrate the town's 50th birthday.

On May 12 and 13 Linstrand Technologies will be bring a balloon and kite fiesta to the town, before a birthday rave with Glenn Aston takes place in Oakengates Theatre.

A digital technologies event for school children will take place at Southwater on June 28, before the Carnival of Telford Giants event on July 15.
