The entertainer, who has starred on I’m A Celebrity and Strictly Come Dancing, is about to set off on a 47-date UK tour.

And he warmed up for it by going through a dress rehearsal at Telford’s Oakengates Theatre, which he will revisit on May 8 when he returns with his show, Jason Donovan’s Amazing Midlife Crisis.

He had been invited to the theatre by venue manager Debbie King, who wanted to kick off Telford’s 50th birthday with a bang.

The manager said that staff had been given a sneak preview of the show and that people can look forward to a great evening.

She said: “We were delighted to welcome Jason to Oakengates Theatre for his dress rehearsal – and we’re really looking forward to his return in May with the show.

“A few of our team got to see what it’s all about and fans are in for a real treat. It’s all of the highlights from his career and people can find out about Neighbours, Kylie, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Ten Good Reasons and a few controversies.

"Tickets have sold quickly and people should book soon before the show sells out as there’s a limited amount left.

“It’s our 50th birthday this year – and I believe it’s Jason’s too.” So it seemed the perfect fit. We’ve got plenty lined up, including a pantomime quite soon, and it’s going to be a special year for Oakengates Theatre.”

Donovan said he was bowled over by the theatre on his first visit to the town. He had been warmly welcomed by Mrs King and her team and was looking forward to meeting local fans on May 8.

He said: “Telford’s a great place and I was made to feel very welcome. I’ve always felt very happy in this area and I’m excited to be coming back in May. I hope lots of fans will come and enjoy the show.”
