Shropshire Star

Shrewsbury certainly liked Joe Lycett

He has put the fun in to funny, wound up national corporations, taken a pop at celebrities and Thursday night it was the turn of Shrewsbury to welcome hit comedian Joe Lycett to the stage.

A sell out crowd packed Theatre Severn and saw the 30-year-old Brummie entertain them in a 90 minute set.

With the usual Shrewsbury/Shroosbury debate settled within seconds, he had a chat with Amy from Copthorne (Is that a posh area?) and then launched in to his hit show.

The eponymously named I'm About to Lose Control and I Think Joe Lycett tour has been making its way around the country since early this year.

Yet his witty observations, asides and skits seemed as fresh as the day he wrote them.

A regular on Eight of 10 Cats, Taskmaster and Live at The Apollo, Joe is famed for his social media exchanges with traffic wardens, banks and public bodies. And he shared a few of those with the audience. From trolling Olympic diver Tom Daley over his Barclays sponsorship at the Pride festival in 2017, to an incident with a bottle of wine and security pass at the Birmingham base of RBS he conjured up laughs which kept the audience begging for more.

Having just moved in to a new flat in Kings Heath in Birmingham he told of his interaction with a salesman from upmarket paint retailer Farrow and Ball and his dealings with tradesmen who all seem to speak a language totally foreign to himself.

His talented and artistic mother Helen, her friends and neighbours and his friends dating back to his childhood did not escape his gentle ribbing.

While much of the content of his show was a tad too rude to print in a daily paper, it is safe to say that it was done with style and humour rather than being downright dirty.

His talents it seems know no bounds. Painting is another of his 'skills' - leading to a warm friendship with one of the Chuckle Brothers - and it provided a colourful backdrop to his show.

Audience participation was encouraged - during the interval the audience were encouraged to tweet him and the hilarious results were read out much to his delight.

It is safe to say that Lycett will, going on his performance on Thursday night and the way he has made his way in to the hearts of the comedy fraternity, be around for some time - and I think I like it.
