The success of last weekend's 80s concert has seen Shrewsbury Town Council confirm that it has pencilled in a date for a repeat concert with the same promoter next year.

The council has also confirmed that the provisional plan to hold the concert in July would avoid a clash with the Shropshire County Show.

Helen Ball, Shrewsbury Town Council clerk, said organisers were thrilled with the response to the concert and the promoter's desire to stage a repeat event next year.

The same promotion team also put on Jesse J and Status Quo concerts in the town.

Mrs Ball said: "We were glad to welcome Let's Rock to Shrewsbury. The event attracted almost 10,000 people and working with the promoter and other agencies including the police and Shropshire Council made sure the event was well organised and no issues arose as a result.

"Given the heightened level of national security, there was a quiet understanding and appreciation by concert goers of the increased security measures and the overall ambience of the concert was happy and fun.

"This event puts Shrewsbury in the map as a visitor attraction and many who attended the concert who had never been to Shrewsbury before expressed a wish to return. We are delighted that Let's Rock want to return to Shrewsbury in 2018 and a date has been pencilled in for July next year."

Let's Rock featured performances from Tony Hadley, ABC, Billy Ocean, and T'Pau.

Shrewsbury Town Council leader Alan Mosley said the events would help put Shrewsbury on the map.

He said: "Congratulations to the organiser who provided so much entertainment and fun for such large numbers of people. It is great news for Shrewsbury, which puts us even further on the map and congratulations to all the council staff for making it all possible and providing such high quality support.

"It is just great news for Shrewsbury and shows a vibrant town at its best.

"I am really pleased for this to come back and actually become a major date in the Shrewsbury event calendar."

Armed police were deployed to the event last week as West Mercia Police stepped up security in the wake of the Manchester terror attack.

The town will host another huge concert next week when worldwide star Rod Stewart performs at Shrewsbury Town Football Club's stadium, the Greenhous Meadow.
