Doctor Foster fans have been left awestruck as the BBC drama returned with an explosive first episode.

Suranne Jones reprised her role as scorned GP Dr Gemma Foster, who was plunged into fresh scenes of emotional torture as the second series opened with the return of her cheating husband Simon (Bertie Carvel).

The hour-long show on Tuesday night caught up with the characters two years after the first season of Mike Bartlett’s hit thriller, and saw the doctor already beginning to crack as her devious ex tried to use their own son Tom (Tom Taylor) as a pawn to torment her.

It has already proved a hit, with one especially impressed fan commenting on Twitter: “Was a bit concerned about how try could continue Doctor Foster but blooming heck was it thrilling, I’ve not been that in edge for a while.”

“Omg Doctor Foster is toooo good,” wrote one fan, and another posted: “Doctor Foster didn’t disappoint.”

One even commented: “Doctor Foster…Hands down the best program on telly!! #BossLady #WhatsInTheBox!”

Airing at 9pm on BBC 1, the beginning of the show clashed with the last part of Channel 4’s The Great British Bake Off.

It also broadcast on the same evening as Jones’ recording of the CBeeBies Bedtime Story – aimed at a much younger audience.
