Game on for community event

Sport, music, arts and dance will be on the menu for the fifth annual Oswestry Community Games next weekend.

The event takes place on September 24 in the town's award winning Cae Glas Park with local organisations providing free activities for people to try their hand at from 11am – 3.45pm.

Shropshire‘s Kelly Edwards who represented Team GB Judo at London 2012, Commonwealth Games 2014 and recently at the World Judo Championships in Budapest is this year’s Guest of Honour whilst Radio Shropshire’s James Bond is the MC.

Last year saw around 1000 people of all ages in the park, and organisers anticipate at least that number this year.

In addition to last year’s activities, Cricket, Boxing, Oswestry Otters, Judo, Tai Chi, Qigong, African drumming, Belly dancing, Street dancing are amongst the new activities for everyone to see and take part in “have a go sessions”.

Ron Bond or Rambling Ron and Dave Andrews will be working together with Walking for Health to offer a variety of local walking opportunities from beginners through to recreational through to “Round Oswestry Challenge” of up to 33 miles.

Bartells, a local music group will provide the music to keep us entertained through the day. Oswestry Border Counties School of Gymnastics will again provide the closing ceremony finale. Volunteers from the Girl Guide Assocation will be a key support to the Games helping in numerous ways to make the day run more smoothly.

The event has been sponsored by the Wynnstay Hotel, Gap personnel, Oswestry Town Council, Inclusively Fit Project and Oswestry Sports Forum.

Town Mayor, Councillor Vince Hunt, said: “As a Town Council we fully support Oswestry Community Games.

"I have always enjoyed the activities and marvel at the way the community comes together. What a great day out it is to see a showcase of local organisations, to try a new sport, watch displays and also enjoy art, music and dance. Year on year it gets bigger and better. This is a great community event in our local calendar and long may it continue.”
