A brand new event for a market town has grown beyond expectations, and needs more volunteer stewards to make it a success.

Market Drayton's Party in the Park, which has only been planned for about a month, has expanded ever since organisers Mike Smith and Tim Beckett announced it and will include eight hours of musical performances, food, a bar and more.

Organisers now say the free event on August 12 needs more volunteer stewards to come forward to make sure the inaugural event is a success.

After attending Whitchurch's Party in the Park, Mike Smith floated the idea of running a free community fun day in Market Drayton. He spoke with Tim Beckett, with who he collaborates in organising other events, and the two got town mayor Mark Whittle on board too to begin planning.

They said they were amazed with the enthusiasm of the bands and stallholders involved, who have come forward in droves.

Mike Smith said: "I am still staggered about how much has been possible in such a short time. There are still things to do but we are almost there. We could really do with more stewards to help out on the day.

"It's going to be a packed day with three dance troupes, three four piece bands, three soloists plus guitar plus about four local superb karaoke singers. We still have more joining us, children's entertainers plus more."

Among the performers on the day will be Market Drayton’s own teenage singer Lilly Boughey and homegrown acoustic duo Money Gum.
