Fans flocked to The Buttermarket in Shrewsbury to witness a 30th anniversary performance by T'Pau of hit single China in Your Hand, which hit number one in 1987.

The band, which formed in the town in 1986, saw huge success in the late 1980s as China in Your Hand hit the top spot for five weeks whilst at the same time, their debut album Bridge of Spies also topped the charts for two weeks in 1987, much to the dismay of former Beatles John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Die hard fans danced the night away at the intimate, yet energetic gig as Decker and original band member Ronnie Rogers came back to Shrewsbury, performing hits through the decades including Heart & Soul and Valentine.

Grant Lees, Group operations director of The Buttermarket said: “It was fantastic to welcome T’Pau back to Shrewsbury to help celebrate such an important anniversary for the band.

“We were delighted to be able to help kickstart the tour with an intimate homecoming show which saw fans from far and wide come to see Carol, Ronnie and the band perform their hits from throughout the years.”

Life-long T’Pau fan Mary Langford from Surrey, who appeared on popular television show Stars in Their Eyes as Carol Decker in 2000, was at the special gig.

She said: “T’Pau have provided the soundtrack to my life for the past 30 years, so as a superfan it was amazing to be able to visit the place where it all began and relive some memories from over the years. It was a brilliant night!”
