Knighton Show and Carnival faces wait over grant

Knighton Show and Carnival Committee will have to wait until the new year to find out if they will get a grant from the town council.

This year the town council did not give the group a grant because members were concerned that the show and carnival committee gives out money to other people themselves.

The secretary of the group wrote to the town council recently to say they were saddened to hear that the town council would not support them this year.

She said the show and carnival is very successful, the biggest day in Knighton during the year and it is run by a dedicated band of volunteers who work hard to put on the event for all residents and visitors.

Mrs Gillum said the costs involved in putting on the show and carnival increase each year and they try to keep the entry costs as low as possible each year so that everyone in town can afford to attend.

Town clerk Neil King said although the town council decided at its precept meeting this year not to give the group a grant, they have given the £1,000 previously, and they could still go back on their decision.

He said it would probably be best to consider the application at the budget setting meeting.

Members agreed to consider giving the group a grant for 2019 and 2020 during their precept meeting in January.
