Spooky time for Yvette as most haunted visits Shropshire

She may have been tempted to shout "I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here!" during her time in the jungle – but Yvette Fielding also had the shivers put up her during a visit to one of Shropshire's haunted castles.

The former Blue Peter presenter, fresh from her escapades Down Under on the ITV show, spent one of the coldest nights of the year at Whittington Castle.

And it was more than the temperatures on Tuesday night that sent a shiver down her spine.

She and the Most Haunted team, including "demonologist" Fred Batt, were welcomed by Sue Ellis, manager of the ancient castle, for the filming for the paranormal series this week.

Miss Ellis, who showed the group around, said they had been delighted with the venue and added the findings would probably be aired in the summer.

"They loved the castle and the area and were very interested in the legends that we have in Whittington," she said.

She said she told Ms Fielding about the tales of children seen in the castle including a little boy who has been seen walking through the castle walls.

Most of the interest centred around a suit of armour that was found in the Castle moat when in was dredged in the 1960s.

"We have had the armour dated and it is believe to date back to the Civil War," Miss Ellis said.

"We understand that the cavalry was sent from Shrewsbury to help soldiers in Oswestry but they didn't get there in time and there was a skirmish in Whittington."

"There is also a hole in the armour that could be from a pikeman's weapon."

"They film crew went into the room where the armour is kept and did a lot of filming."

"Yvette Fielding said that there were some very interesting recordings that will be revealed when the programme is aired, probably in June."

Legends surrounding the 12th century castle include two children who have been seen looking out of the windows of the gatehouse towers. The youngsters are believed to have died in terrible circumstances after a cursed Elizabethan chest was opened.

The chest was hidden away for many years, but has recently been taken away to be restored. The chest still remains locked and the key is thought to have been lost in the moat.

Other paranormal activity has been witnessed in the ruins, with the appearance of a horseman in ancient costume and white mists and balls of light appearing from nowhere.

For many years Whittington Castle was in the hands of the Fitzwarine family.

It is now run on a long lease by the Whittington Castle Preservation Trust.

Throughout the year the castle plays host to re-enactment societies, welcomes school visits, wedding and other social events. It has a tea room and a visitor centre.
