The attraction, in Brindleyplace, shuts after the school half term holiday for the first time in its 22-year history.

It is the first large scale investment in the attraction since 2014 when the Penguin Ice Adventure exhibition, home to a colony of Gentoo penguins, opened to visitors.

Work on the centre will take place between November 5 to 11 when the aquarium will be closed.

Details of the revamp are being kept under wraps but officials say it will allow the centre to welcome new species.

National Sea Life Centre general manager, Amy Langham, said: "We’re always looking at new ways to excite our guests and evolve the attraction.

"The remodelling will enable us to house new creatures in the future, some of which will never have been seen before in the UK.

"Further information is currently being kept secret, but stay tuned for exciting updates being announced in 2019.

"We’ve really grown over the past few years since the introduction of our famous penguins, and we know that this large scale build will provide brilliant new experiences for all of our guests, both new and returning.

"Guests looking forward to a visit in the school half term needn’t worry though; we’ll be open as normal, with the short-term closure taking place from November 5."

The animal care team will look after and monitor the existing creatures while the works take place.

The National Sea Life Centre Birmingham is home to more than 2,000 creatures, many which have been rescued or successfully bred.
