Organisers behind the Ginger and Spice Festival in Market Drayton have confirmed stand-up comedian George Egg is to star at the inaugural event taking place this month.

The self-proclaimed ‘Anarchist Cook’ will perform his latest show ‘DIY Chef’ as a satellite event of the festival on the evening of September 28 at the Festival Drayton Centre at 7.30pm.

The show is said to be a cocktail of comedy, striking innovation and extreme multi-tasking.

Egg is a stand-up comedian who cooks food live on stage using unconventional methods and unexpected equipment.

His routine sees him being banished from the family kitchen and relocated to the garden shed where he builds an improvised kitchen.

During an inventive hour-long set he prepares a breakfast, a lunch and a dinner using the likes of wallpaper strippers, a heat gun, a paper shredder, power tools, office equipment, hair-dressing appliances and gardening implements.

But audience members may wince at the fact that they will get to eat the concoctions at the end of the show.

Julia Roberts, festival organiser, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that George Egg is starring at the first annual Ginger and Spice Festival, with his critically acclaimed show, ‘DIY Chef’.

“We hope that his humour and creativity will set the tone for the festival which aims to re-connect locals with the rich culinary links and heritage of the town which is famous for gingerbread, spices, damsons and little Clive pies, as well as attracting new visitors.”

Tickets are £12.50 per person and £10.50 for concessions.

They can be purchased online from the Festival Drayton Centre by visiting www.festivaldraytoncentre.com/whatson/liveevents or alternatively, bookings can be made by calling 01630 654444.
