The pupils from St Lucia's Church of England Primary School in Shrewsbury visited Whittington Castle near Oswestry as part of their history project.

Many of them were able to dress up in period costume, as knights, jesters and villagers from the time when Whittington was an important fortification along the English/Welsh border.

The castle, which is run as a community and education centre after it was saved from development by villagers, welcomes scores of school trips each year.

Pupils get the chance to explore the historic site on a tour and talk, and learn about some of the characters who once lived there.

They also get to join a quiz and trail where they form teams of castle guards, entertainers and fools, castle servants, lady Eleanor and guests, and a welsh raiding party.

Tables for the visits are also set out for a medieval style banquet lunch.

This year sees the 10th anniversary of a major restoration of parts of the ancient monument after the castle's preservation trust won Heritage Lottery funding.

The venue will also be hosting an exhibition from Wrexham Art Group starting later this month.

The exhibition will open on September 20 until October 1.
