Market Drayton's first Ginger and Spice Festival announces line-up
The line up for Market Drayton's first annual Ginger and Spice Festival has been announced.
The brand new Festival, which has been backed by the Market Drayton Town Council, and also sponsored by local businesses such as Image on Food, Billington’s Gingerbread, Clive & Coffyne Pub and RockIT Events, is positioned as a community event and will take place over four days.
The festival aims to encourage locals to re-connect with the town’s food heritage and history, as well as attracting new visitors to the town who are interested in food, history, culture and travel. It is also hoped that passing canal traffic will attend the festival.
The festival will include Clive’s Pop-up Supper Club, comedian cook George Egg, Shropshire’s Wild Dining Pop-up with James Sherwin, The Spice Exchange Street Market, Billington’s Gingerbread Baking Contest and more.
Satellite events will be taking place in the town, & throughout the surrounding areas, during the week commencing September 23, culminating in a Ginger and Spice Street Food Party on September 30.
Explore the Spice Exchange street market where you will be able to meet local artisan spice producers and taste their spicy street food, plus live tabla and sitar music throughout the day.
Meet the experts at talks and demos throughout the town; botanists, chefs, scientists, authors and health experts will offer a series of interesting and insightful talks including facts about spices, their medicinal and healing properties, origins and the fascinating links to Market Drayton.
For fun around the town, take part in a spice trail around the town and discover Market Drayton’s spicy secrets.
Taking place as a satellite event of the first annual Ginger and Spice Festival in Market Drayton, this contest has been very kindly sponsored by Billington’s Gingerbread and also Image on Food, two local gingerbread baking and manufacturing companies.
The panel of judges will include local artisan baker Mr Tim Hopcroft – the current baker of Billington’s Gingerbread, plus the previous artisan baker of Billington’s Gingerbread, Mr Terry McCarthy.
The judging will take place on September 30 at the Festival Drayton Centre at 11.30am, and will include both an over 18s’ category and a children’s category.
Are you a ginger fox ? If so, enter the Ginger and Spice Festival's Best Red-Head contest and be crowned Ginger King or Queen of Market Drayton for one whole year. Winners will receive some fantastic prizes which are to be confirmed.
