Jasper’s stand-up stands out at Shrewsbury show

Our evening took a turn from the unexpected to the wonderfully surreal when we found ourselves up on our feet clapping and singing along to an ELO medley accompanied by the giant of rock Bev Bevan.

This is what happens when Jasper Carrott brings along his buddies for an evening of Stand Up and Rock at Theatre Severn Shrewsbury.

Carrott was the host for the evening, addressing the audience with such casual bon homme that you felt you were at the house party of an old friend.

And his appearance follows recent performances in Stafford and Telford.

In a routine which had a local flavour, Carrott's observed the friendly rivalries between Telford and Shrewsbury and of his life in Birmingham and Wolverhampton.

Even Ditherington got a special mention on more than one occasion.

Carrott was on top form putting a humourus slant on the 'joys' of getting older, his desire to swap the wisdom of old age for the body of a 21 year old and of grandchildren flushing their Buzz Lightyears down the U-bend – and who knew an insurance claim document could be so funny?!

But he did not entertain the Shrewsbury crowds alone and it was the introduction of Bev Bevan and his band that whipped the crowd into a frenzy.

New face, Suzi Woo and former Rocking Berries front man Geoff Turton sang songs from 60s, 70s and early 80s.

Both have wonderful voices and crowd appeal. Geoff in particular was a master of the one-liner and could give Carrott a run for his money as a raconteur.

Stand Up and Rock is at Theatre Severn until Wedneday and is a must see.
