The Vaisakhi parade, which started from Guru Nanak Darbar Sikh Gurdwara in Oakengates and finished at Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Hadley, marked the birth of the Sikh religion.

Vaisakhi is also known as the faith's harvest festival. Roads were closed for the parade, which featured drummers, ceremonial dancers and traditional music, with walkers also handing out sweets to onlookers.

Bhupinder Sandher, from Apley, was waiting for the procession to start with her eight-year-old daughter Anoop. The 37-year-old said her husband, Gurpreet Singh, and six-year-old son Harjeevan Singh were in one of the trucks taking part in the procession

"We come here every year, we don't miss it," she said. "My husband and son are playing the drums. It's a lovely day for it, the sun is shining.

It's the biggest Sikh event of the year.

"All of the big towns will have the event, my husband is born and bred here so we always come here. Occasionally we will go to Birmingham's event too. It shows the kids what the religion is all about."

Sukhy Virdee travelled to the event from London with her four-year-old daughter and son, Reeya and Sahib, and her husband Ricky.

The 41-year-old said: "This is the second time we have been to the event in Telford."
