Family-run Shrewsbury Fish Bar, which serves up traditional fish and chips in its own secret batter mix, fended off stiff competition from shops across the county to take the title.

The takeaway, which is on Tilstock Crescent, Sutton Farm, is run by Ray Mustafa, aged 45.

He opened the chip shop in 2013 and is proud of his win. Ray, who runs the chip shop with his wife Lynne, said: "I am really pleased to have won Chip Shop of the Year.

"It is thanks to my loyal customers and without them I would not be where I am today. I have to say thanks to them and to everyone who has supported me. I have had a fantastic response."

Andy Maxwell, circulation manager at the Shropshire Star which ran the campaign, added: "This was the first time we have run Chip Shop of the Year in the Shropshire Star.

"The response we had to it was amazing. There was a mixture of entries from across the county.

"It ran as a token-collect promotion and Shrewsbury Fish Bar collected the most tokens.

"It is great to recognise their hard work and dedication." The runner up was Cod Frydays in Brookside, Telford, and in third place was Ludlow Fish Bar.
