Captain Roger Johnson today insisted: “I’m back” – after admitting Wolves’ poor run left a miserable mood in the camp.

The £4.5m defender was as affected as anyone during Wolves’ slump of one point in seven games before Sunday’s timely 3-1 win against Wigan and made no secret of being below-par. But he was Wolves’ best player in the 3-1 defeat at Manchester City and showed signs of coming out of his dip at the weekend.

“I was disappointed and certainly had a word with myself, but for the Man City and Wigan games I was back to my normal self,” said the 28-year-old defender.

“I’ve not been performing how I’ve wanted to. The manager brought me here and I wanted to repay him with good performances.

“I started well but then lost a bit of form in those games when we weren’t doing so well.

“As individuals and as a team we weren’t playing too well. So it was nice to get the three points against Wigan, who are down there with us.”

Wolves players, as well as boss Mick McCarthy, were under huge pressure before the Wigan game, and Johnson admitted the tension was unavoidable.

“It does all get a bit miserable when you don’t get the right results and it had been like that with us for a month or so,” said the former Birmingham stopper.

“We’d gone through that time when we had a few losses on the bounce and ended that against Swansea.

“It was massive for us to go into this break with a win, especially on the back of the results previously.”

Johnson feels Wolves didn’t have the luck with them in their recent run, which included five successive defeats, especially in the setbacks against Liverpool, where he scored an own goal, and Newcastle, when Wolves had a legitimate effort and a penalty ruled out.
