Wolves are considering offering free agent James McFadden a trial to prove himself worthy of a contract.

Chief executive Jez Moxey confirmed Wolves’ interest in the Scotland international yesterday and I understand talks have taken place with a view to having a look at the player who left Birmingham at the end of last season after cruciate ligament damage.

McFadden, who can play up front or on either flank, had not arrived at Compton this morning, however.

Given the serious nature of the 28-year-old’s injury, Wolves want to have a closer look at him first before committing themselves to a permanent deal.

McFadden turned down a move to Aberdeen last week in the hope of remaining in the Premier League.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy is keen to bolster his striking options and has one space left in his 25-man squad after only naming a roster of 24 players last week.

Clubs can sign players who are free agents outside the transfer window.

With Sylvan Ebanks-Blake out with an injured hamstring and Wolves having sold Stefan Maierhofer and sent Andy Keogh on loan as part of the 16-strong army of departures this summer, they only have Sam Vokes as a fit senior alternative to first-choice pairing Kevin Doyle and Steven Fletcher.

Ebanks-Blake was ruled out for up to six weeks after damaging his hamstring scoring in the 4-0 Carling Cup win at Northampton on August 23.

It is understood McCarthy attempted to strengthen his attack before last week’s cut-off by enquiring about taking Manchester United striker Federico Macheda on loan, but that was rejected by Sir Alex Ferguson.
