Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today indicated he is happy with the depth of his squad nearing the end of the transfer window.

McCarthy still wants a powerful, defensive central midfielder but, with less than two weeks of the window left, he has struggled to find what he wants for the right value.

However, with Roger Johnson and Jamie O’Hara settled in and a year’s more Premier League experience in the rest of the squad, the Wolves chief is confident of the balance of his side.

“The key is having a really good squad so that if someone is injured, we have someone just as good to come in and play,” he said.

“We’ve got two players in every position who can play in the Premier League.

“We need that competition. The ones on the bench are just as important because they have to play if anyone gets injured.

“But it’s important to keep our best players in – it’s vital they stay fit.”

Wolves looked comfortable playing 4-4-2 in their 2-1 opening-day victory at Blackburn and McCarthy believes he has the personnel to stick with it for the time being.

“Playing 4-4-2 requires a bit more workrate from players, and players must be prepared to do it – but that’s what we’ve got,” he said.

“That’s what I buy and that’s what I have in my team.

“There are times with five in midfield where you’ve just got players in slots that just make you harder to break down.”

Despite what he described as a “comfortable” win at Blackburn, he warned: “But it was one performance.”

And McCarthy maintains Wolves must retain a measured approach at home to Fulham on Sunday.

“You can’t just go gung-ho, because if you don’t score from doing that, what else have you got? You run out of steam and the opposition maybe pick you off.”
