Wolves set the standard says Mick McCarthy
Tuesday 16th August 2011, 11:29AM BST.
Mick McCarthy today declared Wolves have set the standard for the season with their winning performance against Blackburn.
Wolves got off to a flyer with a convincing 2-1 victory at Ewood Park which has set them up for their first home game against Fulham this Sunday and has left the Molineux boss happy.
“The whole performance of the team set the benchmark,” said McCarthy.
“It wasn’t just the wingers because if you start going through them you could go through the lot.
“But I thought it was a solid performance from everyone.”
McCarthy was particularly pleased with strikers Kevin Doyle and Steven Fletcher, who played together up front.
“They were different class,” he said.

“On that performance, they set the benchmark as forwards for anyone else who wants to play up there – Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Sam Vokes and Stefan Maierhofer.
“They all know what they’ve got to do. We’ve worked with them to try to get a bit of shape for them to play off each other and they were great on Saturday.
“And in addition to how well they played, there was also the amount of work they got through and the type of work they did.
“Whatever people said Blackburn about losing three centre-backs, they still had a lad who’s not a bad centre-back in Grant Hanley and Steven Nzonzi, who’s the best in the air when he plays midfield.
“But our two lads caused them heaps of problems.
“And we’ve got two good headers of the ball in Fletcher and Doyle – they’re terrific.”
McCarthy was especially pleased with the controlled way Wolves saw out the game after the costly late goals of last season.
