Roger Johnson is set to be unveiled as Wolves’ third summer signing tomorrow – as boss Mick McCarthy looks to continue strengthening.

The 28-year-old defender declared he is “halfway” to signing for Wolves as he continues to undergo his medical.

Birmingham confirmed a fee had been agreed yesterday, but it is believed to be slightly under the club record £7m Wolves paid for Steven Fletcher last summer.

The former Cardiff defender has agreed a long-term deal set to make him Wolves’ highest paid player at around £40,000 a week.

Negotiations for Johnson were resumed over the weekend, it has emerged, after Blues came down on their demands because of their financial position.

Wolves are armed with extra funds after the £1m sale to Portsmouth of Greg Halford, who signed a three-year deal yesterday.

Next on their hit-list is a left-back, although boss Mick McCarthy would like to bring in another central defender and they retain an interest in West Ham’s Matthew Upson.

Jonathan Woodgate, who signed for Stoke yesterday, wanted £20,000-a-week plus £10,000-a-week appearance money, but Wolves declined the offer.

As for left-backs, Wolves have to weigh up whether to go toe-to-toe with Albion for Birmingham’s £3m-rated Liam Ridgewell, or choose Hearts’ Lee Wallace, who has a year left on his contract and would cost between £1m-1.5m.

  • Wolves this afternoon announced a £50 million expansion project including new training facilities, the relocation of a school, a new university complex and a housing development at their Compton Park base.
